The story of Loreto Federation

Over 70 years of uniting Loreto alumnae across Australia

Loreto Federation is one of Australia's most enduring alumnae traditions.

Every two years, women from Loreto schools across the country come together for a weekend of reflection, conversation and genuine connection, united by shared values and a tradition that stretches back more than 125 years.

Each Federation centres on a theme chosen to reflect the critical issues of our time. It is a space to think deeply, listen openly and leave with renewed purpose, true to the spirit Mary Ward instilled in Loreto education over 400 years ago.

A conference with purpose

Loreto Federation is a biennial conference for alumnae of Loreto schools across Australia.

Every two years, women from every generation come together for a weekend of reflection, conversation and genuine connection, united by shared values and a tradition stretching back over 70 years.

Each Federation centres on a theme chosen to reflect the critical issues of our time. It is a space to think deeply, listen openly and leave with renewed purpose and be true to the spirit Mary Ward instilled in Loreto education over 400 years ago.

Long before Australia itself federated in 1901, Mother Gonzaga Barry was already imagining a federation of a different kind.

Writing to her alumnae in 1897, she urged Loreto women to unite in a shared commitment to living well and doing good. Her words were not just inspirational. They were practical. She outlined why it mattered and how it might be achieved.

It was Moira Dynon (née Shelton, Loreto Toorak 1936) who first took that vision and made it real. Recognising the power of bringing all Loreto associations together, she sought and received support from Past Pupils' Associations across the country, formed a Federation Committee with representatives from each, and set about planning the inaugural event.

Loreto Toorak hosted the first Loreto Federation in 1955. The gathering passed resolutions, prepared a Spiritual Bouquet presented to Pope Pius XII, and established a format that has endured for 70 years. The decision was made at that very first conference to hold a second and the tradition has continued ever since.
